Axelrod downplays criticism of Harris’ word salad city, arguing that voters still don’t know the vice president

Former Obama adviser David Axelrod appeared to downplay his criticism of Vice President Kamala Harris’ “word salad city” answers during Wednesday night’s CNN town hall.

“You mentioned that some of your answers to tough questions, particularly about Israel and immigration, resulted in ‘Word Salad City’ and were essentially focused on talking points. By his own admission, Donald Trump wavers when answering certain questions, and it seems “I wonder how you think Harris can cope with what seems like a completely different set of standards,” CNN host Boris Sanchez asked Axelrod on Thursday.

Axelrod agreed that Harris is held to a higher standard than former President Trump, and emphasized all the positive aspects of Harris’ answers that evening before acknowledging his comment.

“Yes, she is in a more difficult position because she basically had to introduce herself to the American people within 90 days. We’ve seen Donald Trump for years, and he understands… there’s no doubt about it. Boris, listen.” to a Donald Trump rally, and it’s an incredible flight because you never know where he’s going or where he’s going to land or how one point relates to another. But that’s kind of priced into Donald Trump’s stock,” Axelrod said.

He continued: “As people really try to get to know Kamala Harris, her answers are under greater scrutiny because people are looking for clues about who she is and where she is going, and that puts additional pressure on them.”

“I know that particular part of my analysis has been quoted a lot,” Axelrod admitted. “I also talked about some of the strengths of her presentation, including when she said the difference between us is that he comes into the office with an enemies list and I come into the office with a to-do list of how we’re working on these things, these concerns that we have discussed here this evening. I think that was a strong and compelling and really fundamental argument in the last ten days of this campaign.

He added that this argument “really touched” him and hoped she would continue to use it in the campaign.

Axelrod went viral after admitting at town hall that Harris had gone to “word salad town” and provided answers to questions she didn’t want to answer.

“The thing that would concern me is if she doesn’t want to answer a question,” Axelrod said. “Her habit is to go into a sort of ‘word salad town,’ and she did that with some of the answers. One referred to Israel. Anderson asked a direct question: “Would you be stronger than Trump on Israel?” And there was a seven-minute answer, but none of it related to the question he was asking.

He continued: “On certain issues like this, immigration, I thought she missed an opportunity by not acknowledging concerns about the government’s policies. And that is a mistake. Sometimes you have to admit things, and she didn’t admit much.”
