Stephen Fry appointed Visiting Professor of Creative Media

Stephen Fry is an English actor, screenwriter, author, playwright, journalist, poet, comedian, television presenter, film director and general national treasure. Fry has written and presented several documentary series, written columns and articles for newspapers and magazines, reads for speakers, appears frequently on radio, and has written four novels and three volumes of autobiography: Moab is my washing pot, The Fry Chronicles and his latest, Make a fool of me even more.

His notable acting roles include his award-winning performance in Savageshis iconic projects with Hugh Laurie (like A bit of Fry and Laurie, Jeeves and Wooster And Blackadder) and especially his memorable performances in blockbuster projects V for VendettaThe Sherlock Holmes films and The Hobbit Series. Stephen’s latest European feature film TREASURE alongside Lena Dunham and directed by Julia Von Heinz celebrated its world premiere at this year’s Berlinale.

As a proud gay man who is award winning OutsideDocumenting the lives of lesbian, bisexual, gay and transgender people around the world is part of his thirty-year advocacy for the rights of the LGBT+ community.

Professor Marion Turner, Chair of the English Faculty Board 2021-2024, commented: “I am delighted that Stephen Fry has accepted our invitation to be Visiting Professor of Creative Media for 2024-2025.” Stephen’s versatility, experience and innovation in so many forms of media are a perfect fit for this role.
