Fred Upton, the Republican former congressman from Michigan who spent 36 years in the House of Representatives, announced Thursday that he is supporting Kamala Harris for president. Upton, who retired two years ago after becoming one of only 10 House Republicans to vote to impeach Donald Trump following the Capitol insurrection on January 6, 2021, recounted The Detroit News that the former president “did not change his colors.” “As he watches Trump day in and day out, he has ignored the advice of many high-ranking and respected Republicans to stick to the issues,” the 71-year-old said. “Instead he keeps talking about how the election was stolen and women are being vilified left and right. He’s just completely unhinged. We don’t need this chaos. We have to move forward, and that’s why I’m where I am.” Upton said he has already cast his vote for Harris, which is the first time he has ever voted to elect a Democratic president. Trump celebrated In 2022, when Upton announced his resignation, one of his campaign spokesmen on Thursday was dismissive of the news that he was supporting Harris. “Any ‘Republican’ who advocates for another four years of unrestricted illegal immigration and rising prices under Kamala Harris is neither Republican nor worth listening to,” said Victoria LaCivita, communications director for the Trump campaign in Michigan.
