The good news for the Miami Heat is that things can only go up from here in the 2024-25 season.

Miami fell short in its season opener with a stunning 116-97 loss to the Orlando Magic. The fact that the game was being played at home made the result even worse, and Orlando pulled away with a dominant 39-18 performance in the third quarter.

Paolo Banchero appeared to be in midseason form with 33 points and 11 rebounds, while Franz Wagner contributed 23 points.

On the other hand, Miami’s two stars appeared to be anything but in midseason form.

Jimmy Butler went 1 of 8 from the field en route to three points, while Bam Adebayo went 1 of 5 from the field. Adebayo still added seven free throws for nine points on the night, but both will need to be significantly better if the Heat want to make a splash in the Eastern Conference.

Of course, there was a lot to say about the performance on social media:

I’m probably being dramatic, but this could be the worst stretch of Heat basketball since…?? be.
Tf is this garbage

Aside from Butler and Adebayo, things weren’t going too badly for Miami as they were a solid but unspectacular 11 of 34 from deep and had a respectable 11 turnovers. Rebounding was somewhat of an issue as the Magic tallied 18 offensive boards, but even that could have been overcome by the home team had Orlando not burst into flames in the third quarter.

It didn’t help that Butler and Adebayo played so poorly on offense.

The Heat won three of their four matches against the Magic last season, so they may have overlooked their in-state opponents. But that would be unwise since Orlando has plenty of young talent and is coming off a playoff performance.

Miami will certainly be in the spotlight after a poor opening performance and will bounce back on Saturday on the road against the Charlotte Hornets.
