North Korean soldiers where to travel Russia and when they join the fight against UkraineThey become legitimate military targets and it is also a sign of the Kremlin’s weakness that White House said on Wednesday.
In a press conference, the spokesman for the National Security Council said John Kirby said: “We will see what the Russians and North Koreans will do here. As I said, if these North Korean soldiers decide to join the fight against Ukraine, they will become legitimate military targets.”
Those comments followed South Korea’s claim that at least 3,000 North Korean soldiers will travel to Russia and receive training on drones and other equipment before being deployed to battlefields in Ukraine.
Referring to the same reports, Kirby said they are looking into the situation closely and trying to understand it.
According to Kirby, the soldiers traveled by ship from the Wonsan region of North Korea to Vladivostok, Russia, and then traveled on to several Russian military training areas where they are currently undergoing training.
“We don’t yet know whether these soldiers will fight alongside the Russian military, but that is a certain – certainly an extremely concerning probability,” Kirby said.
He further explained that after completing training, the North Korean soldiers may move to western Russia to fight against the Ukrainian military. The Ukrainian government was also informed about the situation.
“We will continue to monitor the situation closely for the time being. But let’s be clear: If North Korean soldiers actually go into combat, this development would show Russia’s growing desperation in its war against Ukraine,” the NSC spokesman said.
“Russia suffers extraordinary losses on the battlefield every day, but President Putin appears intent on continuing this war. “If Russia were actually forced to turn to North Korea for labor, it would be a sign of weakness, not strength, on the part of the Kremlin,” he added.
Kirby also said that Russia’s cooperation with the North Korean military violates several U.N. Security Council resolutions that ban the procurement of weapons from North Korea and military weapons training. This step also constitutes a violation.
