Extension Rumors: Nets, Hyland, Mitchell

Three networks Player – Cam Thomas, Day’Ron Sharpe And Ziaire Williams – are eligible for rookie extensions through Monday at 5 p.m. CT. Sources tell Brian Lewis of the New York Post (Twitter link) that none of the three are expected to reach an agreement, meaning the trio will hit restricted free agency next summer if they receive qualifying offers.

Thomas, who turned 23 last week, led Brooklyn in scoring last season (22.5 PPG) and could see his role expand further following the Nets’ move Mikal Bridges in the off season. Sharpe spent most of the last three seasons as a backup center for Brooklyn, while former lottery pick Williams was acquired in an offseason trade with Memphis (which meant a pay cut for the Grizzlies).

The Nets expect to be one of the few teams with significant cap space in free agency in 2025, so Lewis’ report isn’t exactly surprising, but it’s certainly notable that they appear to be aiming to to retain as much financial flexibility as possible before the start of the 2025/26 league year.

Here are a few more rookie-scale extension rumors leading up to today’s deadline:

  • Fourth year guard Bones Hyland will not sign an extension with the Hair clipperssaid NBA insider Chris Haynes (Twitter link). Hyland appeared in just 37 games last season, posted career lows in most key stats and was reportedly unhappy with his limited role. He will make $4.16 million in 24/25 before potentially hitting restricted free agency next summer.
  • The Raptors and point guard Davion Mitchell An agreement on an extension is not expected to be reached, tweets Michael Grange of Sportsnet.ca. Mitchell, the No. 9 overall pick in the 2021 draft, was sent from Sacramento to Toronto as part of a salary waiver in the offseason. As Grange notes, waiting on a new contract makes perfect sense for both sides – Mitchell will get a chance to prove his worth, while the Raptors have a full season to consider whether the former Baylor Star should be taken into account in their plans for the future. Like the other players mentioned, Mitchell will be an RFA in 2025 if he is made a qualifying offer.
