NC State QB Grayson McCall announces he is retiring after suffering head injuries

NC State quarterback Grayson McCall is retiring from football following his latest head injury, which he suffered earlier this month, he announced Wednesday.

“I’ve struggled with injuries throughout my career, but I can’t come back from this injury,” McCall posted on Instagram. “Brain specialists, my family and I have concluded that it is in my best interest to hang up the boots.”

McCall, who has suffered from concussions in the past, was carted off the field after suffering a hit to the head following a running play in a home loss to Wake Forest on Oct. 5.

He also suffered a serious head injury while playing for Coastal Carolina last season.

McCall threw for 10,005 yards and 88 touchdowns in 42 games for Coastal Carolina before transferring to NC State in the offseason. In four games for the Wolfpack, he rushed for 518 yards and threw three touchdowns with two interceptions.

“While I feel like my entire world is being taken away from me, I feel a certain sense of contentment,” McCall said in his post. “Every time my feet touched the turf, I left every single ounce of me on the field. I always tried my best and played my best because I never knew which game would be my last. I have no regrets throughout my career and I can be proud of that.”

True freshman CJ Bailey replaced McCall during the Wake Forest game.

McCall wrote that he hoped to return to coaching after his playing career ended.

“I look forward to bringing my passion and love for the game into coaching to serve and guide the next group of kids with a dream,” he said in his post.

NC State (4-4) has a bye this weekend.
