Meredith’s four-wicket success keeps Somerset under control

Somerset strengthened their grip at the top of Group A in the One Day Cup by defeating Middlesex by eight wickets at Lord’s.

Tasmanian bowler Riley Meredith did most of the damage, taking 4-27 from his eight overs to leave Middlesex bowled out for 135, with Luke Hollman’s highest score of 38.

After helpful early hits from George Thomas and Andrew Umeed, Lewis Goldsworthy and James Rew, unbeaten on 61 and 43 respectively, completed the job for Somerset.

Lancashire and Sussex, the last two teams without a win before Sunday’s round of matches, both suffered defeat.

Northamptonshire needed 12 runs in the last over to win, but were thwarted by the tight throw of Australian-South African Chris Green, who also included the wicket of Gus Miller, helping Lancashire to a four-run victory at Wantage Road.

Tom Alsop scored 108 to help Sussex to a six-wicket victory over Surrey at Hove, with Ollie Robinson taking three wickets.

Warwickshire suffered their season-ending One-Day Cup defeat after Yorkshire won their Group B rugby match by six wickets.

With a target of 243, the Vikings made short work of the home team’s attack. William Luxton’s unbeaten 105 points took them to 246 with 33 balls to go.

Opener Harry Duke scored a brisk 60 while George Hill took six wickets for 28 runs. Warwickshire did not drop down the table, however, as Glamorgan also suffered its first defeat.

The league leaders lost narrowly to Leicestershire by nine runs and their encounter at the Uptonsteel County Ground came to an exciting end.

Dan Douthwaite was caught at 61 runs when Roman Walker struck in the penultimate over, just as Glamorgan looked set to reach their target of 272.

Second-placed Worcestershire claimed an easy eight-wicket win over Hampshire at New Road, while the visitors were let down by an early collapse in the batting line-up.

Durham remain hot on the heels of both counties after beating Kent by seven runs at Canterbury, with Ben McKinney their hero of the day with a superb 115 off 116 balls.

Essex easily reached their target of 219 points, defeating Nottinghamshire by seven wickets at Trent Bridge.

Neither team was able to upset the opposition, but the Eagles won comfortably thanks to several star players: Jamal Richards took five wickets, while Robin Das and Noah Thain scored 100 and 83 runs respectively.
