Detroit Lions lose WR Jameson Williams to Packers

The NFC-leading Detroit Lions received some bad news on Monday night: They will be without former first-round receiver Jameson Williams for the next two weeks. Eric Woodyard of ESPN reported that Williams faces a two-game suspension for violating the NFL’s policy on performance-enhancing substances.

Currently, Williams is the Lions’ second-best pass-catching option. He caught 17 balls on 30 targets for 361 yards and three touchdowns, an average of 21.2 yards per catch. To illustrate, the Lions’ number one receiver, Amon-Ra St. Brown, has caught 39 balls on 50 targets for 401 yards and four touchdowns this season.

According to NFL Pro, Williams was the Lions’ top outside receiver target this season, surpassing St. Brown by 268 yards to 209 yards as a split-out receiver in 2024. About half of St. Brown’s production comes from the slot.

With Williams no longer in the mix, Tim Patrick, who was a starter at the start of the season, and Kalif Raymond are expected to fill the former Alabama product’s gaps on the outside. Patrick, who was officially promoted from the practice squad in Week 4, has 165 yards receiving this year. Raymond is right behind him with 148 yards.

This news couldn’t come at a better time for the Green Bay Packers, who have a strong 5-2 record but are 0-1 in the tough NFC North after losing a close game to the Minnesota Vikings three weeks ago. The Packers will host Williams’ Lions at Lambeau Field next week, the final week Williams is suspended by the league.

Detroit quarterback Jared Goff is currently on an MVP campaign pace as he is completing 74 percent of his passes for an average of 9.3 yards per pass and has thrown 10 touchdowns with just four interceptions. However, without Williams, those numbers could go down a bit.
