Minnesota Vikings Power Rankings – Starting Week 8

The Minnesota Vikings suffered their first loss of the season, a hard-fought matchup at home last Sunday 31-29.

Next up are the Los Angeles Rams, a team that barely resembles the one Kevin O’Connell left when he was hired as the Vikings’ head man.

It takes place on Thursday night, so there will be plenty of time to enjoy what happened, but where do the Vikings stand in the power rankings for now?

I’m glad you asked – here’s the consensus overview of this week’s power rankings.

If you have any other rankings you think should be included, feel free to DM me @Brandon_Warne in the tweets.

Let’s talk about it (rankings are hyperlinked to get maximum clicks):

The rankings

key extract: “Three of the next four are on the road, but all four are winnable, so I expect this team to continue to achieve success even after the first setback.”

key extract: “…Honestly, Sunday’s loss to the Lions may have been Minnesota’s second-best performance.”

key extract: “(Will Reichard) made all 30 of his attempts this season, including 18 of 18 on extra point attempts and 12 of 12 on field goal attempts, the most of any NFL kicker without a miss this season.”

key extract: “Can they bounce back from the loss to the Lions before Thursday night?”

key extract: “The Lions suffered their first loss of the season in large part because the defense wasn’t great. They have a quick turnaround time on Thursday to get things sorted.”

key extract: “Brian Flores’ run defense had a disappointing Sunday against Detroit.”

key extract: “Minnesota is the only team in the NFL to rank in the top six in both offense and defense, despite losing its first game on Sunday.”

key extract: “Sam Darnold continues to exceed expectations as Vikings starter.”

key extract: “This should be no disrespect to the Vikings, who, like the Texas Longhorns on Saturday, lost to a great team even at their best and suffered a small drop in the rankings as a result.”

key extract: “They’re still spotless on the road too – and that’s where they’ll live for the foreseeable future, four of their next five away from US Bank Stadium, but only one of those trips (Chicago) to visit a club.” .500 or better.”

key extract: “You shouldn’t downgrade the Vikings much. They are a very good team who were beaten in the last minute by a slightly better team.”

key extract: “The Vikings are still 5-1 and will get TJ Hockenson back from a knee injury this week. “Minnesota is one of the most balanced teams in the league and could almost make the playoffs this season.”

key extract: “Vikes lost a game but they didn’t look bad. Minnesota is a long-term contender.”

key extract: “The Vikings rallied from an 11-point deficit in the fourth quarter to take a one-point lead on two field goals and a defensive touchdown from Ivan Pace Jr. before Bates broke their hearts.”

Average ranking: 4.00 (56 ranking points/14 rankings)

Substitute thoughts: I can’t really think of any criticisms here. ESPN.com Having the Vikings below the Packers feels a bit much, but in a sort of “what have you done for me lately” exercise like a power ranking, I guess somehow get it.
