Frozen waffles and pancakes off the shelves at Walmart, Target and others due to listeria risk

A new recall could affect your household if you like buttermilk waffles in the morning or are trying to increase your protein intake, as some of the most popular frozen waffles and pancakes have been recalled due to a listeria risk.

TreeHouse Foods has announced that it is recalling hundreds of waffle products due to the possibility that they may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

The recalled products were available throughout the United States and Canada and were sold under various private label or generic names, including Walmart’s Great Value, Schnucks, Target’s Good & Gather, Price Chopper, Kodiak, Best Choice and more.

The recalled products include:

  • Always keep 11 ounces of buttermilk pancakes
  • Best Choice 12.3 Ounce Chocolate Wafers
  • Brookshires 16.5-ounce and 33-ounce buttermilk pancakes
  • Good and Gather 10.7-ounce Buttermilk Vanilla Waffles
  • Good and Gather 12.3-ounce Blueberry Waffles
  • Great, 12.3-ounce homestyle waffles
  • Inexpensive 560 gram blueberry waffles
  • Kodiak Cakes 13.4-ounce Vanilla Buttermilk Wafers

Many of the products included in the recall list have already been removed from the chain’s websites. The full list of recalled products, along with lot codes and best purchase dates, can be found here. Photos of the products can be found here.

Customers are urged to check their freezers for these products and discard them or return them to the point of purchase for a refund.

The wide-ranging recall comes less than a month after nearly 12 million pounds of meat were recalled due to a listeria risk.

What is Listeria monocytogenes?

Listeria monocytogenes is a bacteria that can cause listeriosis, a serious foodborne illness. Pregnant women and the elderly are at increased risk of developing serious symptoms associated with the condition.

Symptoms may include fever, muscle pain, headache, stiff neck, confusion, and gastrointestinal distress. In high-risk people, the disease can cause death. According to the Mayo Clinic, if you have a severe listeria infection, you may need antibiotics to aid recovery.
