Ariana Grande has responded to Elvira actress Cassandra Peterson’s claim that the singer was her “shadiest” celebrity encounter, saying she was “disheartened” by the story.

A TikTok of Peterson discussing an encounter with Ariana Grande recently went viral. According to Peterson, Grande declined a photo with the horror icon at one of her stage shows. The actress claimed that she took photos of Grande and her relatives at Grande’s request, but a photo with the singer herself was denied. According to Peterson, Grande turned her down, saying, “No, I’m not actually doing that.”

After the TikTok gained widespread attention online, Elvira posted a screenshot of a news story about the incident on Instagram. Ariana Grande has now responded to the Instagram post, explaining that she suffered from anxiety during the event, which may be why she rejected the photo.

“I’m so disheartened to see this,” Ariana wrote. “Actually, I don’t even remember having the chance to meet you because I had an anxiety attack and from what I remember I left before the rest of my family.”

Ariana further noted that the event in which she apparently snubbed Peterson occurred “about seven years ago” and that she’s “not particularly good at being in crowds or noisy places.” This time frame would mean that the event would have taken place shortly after the Manchester Arena attack, in which 22 people were killed during an Ariana Grande concert.

Grande continued: “If I remember this moment incorrectly, I sincerely apologize for offending you. Thank you for being so kind to my mother. She told me how nice you were (she may have different feelings now, but I’ll talk to her…sure, we all have our days!) I always send her love. You will always be our Halloween Queen!”

Fans also defended Ariana in the comments on Peterson’s post, writing, “People are so quick to turn to hate and for such petty reasons.”

Peterson has not yet responded to Ariana’s apology.
