Ed Reed learns about Guardian Caps during an awkward “ManningCast” exchange

Former Baltimore Ravens superstar Ed Reed appeared on “ManningCast” Monday night while celebrating his former team’s big road win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and at one point things got awkward as a player wearing a goaltender’s cap , caught his attention.

When the “Monday Night Football” broadcast showed the Buccaneers in a scrimmage, Reed noticed that offensive lineman Luke Goedeke was wearing a protective cap. This prompted the Hall of Famer to make a joke about Peyton Manning’s helmet, but Manning wasn’t exactly in the mood to joke when it came to anything related to player safety. Reed didn’t quite get the hint as the two had an awkward back and forth.

“Peyton, they have your helmet out there,” Reed said. “Did they make this into a bug helmet? This is the new thing, right?”

“That’s the protective cap,” Peyton replied. “Most guys wear it in training. But you can also wear it in the game if you want for safety reasons.”

“How much security is that?” Reed asked.

“It’s an extra layer of protection,” Manning explained. “As I said, all players wear them during training camp and practice. And then the players can wear them during the game if they want. This is another layer of protection. That makes sense to me.”

This was clearly Manning’s attempt to deviate from the topic, but Reed remained curious and for some reason brought boxing into the conversation.

“Do you really think the protection does anything different than the carbon fiber on the helmet? When a boxer knocks someone out, he usually hits them in the jaw with his fist,” Reed began. “It only hit him in the top of his head. He is met here. If a person falls unconscious, their neck will break. This will shock and nerve and make her deaf. It’s not just going to happen.” The frontal lobe is due to head movement due to lack of muscle strength in the neck or its weakness that occurs over time.

While Reed’s comments alone made the few minutes of broadcast awkward, the Bucs actually scored a touchdown midway through, but Manning couldn’t really comment on the play while Reed offered his opinion on why the Guardian Caps might not be effective.

It’s safe to assume that Reed wouldn’t have donned a keeper’s hat had they been around during his playing days.
