Mike Evans and Chris Godwin are injured and are a concern in fantasy football

Injuries continue to pile up in the NFL, and things got even worse on Monday night.

First, Buccaneers wide receiver Mike Evans re-aggravated a hamstring injury in practice that had hampered him all week. He caught a pass for 25 yards in the first quarter that led to a touchdown, but was injured shortly after attempting another touchdown catch on another series.

It was implied in the ESPN broadcast that he couldn’t even take off his cleats in the locker room without help, and I’m guessing he’ll miss next week’s game against the Falcons… and probably more.

Then the night got worse.

In the fourth quarter, Chris Godwin caught a pass and lunged forward. His lower left leg was rolled up by a Baltimore defender and his ankle pointed backwards. He was carried off the field with a dislocated ankle and played what may have been his final game of the season.

Entering the game, Godwin ranked third among wideouts in fantasy points per game.

The losses of these two fantasy stars will be difficult to swallow not only for fantasy fans, but also for Baker Mayfield. He was one of the best quarterbacks in fantasy land, but losing his top two options in the passing game will almost certainly hurt his stats going forward.

While I hate talking about replacing Evans and Godwin in fantasy leagues after both were injured (the latter even more so because his injury seemed to be season-ending), it’s part of the job.

Cade Otton, who had eight catches for 100 yards, will get a boost. If he’s on the waiver, add him. As for their wide receivers, I don’t think Jalen McMillan, Trey Palmer, or Sterling Shepard will make a lasting fantasy impact. However, McMilan and Palmer are still worth a waiver claim.

What I can imagine in the coming weeks, or at least until Evans returns, is that offensive coordinator Liam Coen will use his three running backs, Rachaad White, Bucky Irving and Sean Tucker, in more prominent roles. Since White is the best pass catcher of the trio, he has seen a significant increase in scoring opportunities and could be used more often as a receiver on offense.
