San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan announced that star receiver Deebo Samuel Sr. is currently hospitalized with pneumonia and fluid in his lungs after attempting to play against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday.

There is currently no timetable for Samuel’s return as the team focuses on a full recovery.

Samuel was expected to play in Sunday’s Super Bowl LVIII rematch against the Chiefs at Levi’s Stadium, but he was seen courtside with an oxygen mask on his face as he battled an illness.

He also experienced pain during warm-ups, despite wearing his pads and jersey on the sidelines before wearing the oxygen mask.

Then, after standing on the sidelines, Samuel jogged back to the locker room and ended up being out for the rest of the game. He was wearing street clothes and a towel around his neck.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Samuel woke up on Sunday not feeling well, although he tried to push himself to play with his team.

But things quickly got to the point where Samuel had to go to hospital for treatment, where after a series of tests it was discovered that he was suffering from pneumonia and this fluid in his lungs.

This situation with Samuel adds to a plethora of injury problems for the 49ers’ offense this year, as San Francisco receiver Brandon Aiyuk, after a long layoff this offseason, has finally been extended in the contract department for the remainder of the season following multiple injuries Out for the season torn a ligament in his right knee after a hit by the Chiefs.

Given the injury situation, the 49ers would love to get Samuel, a dynamic offensive weapon who can play both receiver and running back, healthy sooner rather than later.

Samuel is in his sixth season with the 49ers, and while McCaffrey usually hogs the spotlight since being traded to the Bay Area from the Carolina Panthers, Samuel has been an indispensable part of Shanahan’s offense as he can do just about anything asked of him became .

Samuel has accumulated 335 receiving yards and 51 rushing yards with two total touchdowns in his first six games this season. He is coming off a season in which he had over 1,000 yards rushing and scored 12 total touchdowns to help the 49ers reach the Super Bowl.
