Celebrating Amy: Our Heroine

For nearly two decades, viewers across Middle Tennessee and Southern Kentucky have woken up to NewsChannel 5’s Amy Watson.

Amy is special – she is not only a great journalist, but also a great human being. Every morning she left Hopkinsville at 2 a.m. to help you start your day. But that will soon change. This is Amy’s final week at NewsChannel 5. On Friday, she officially retires after more than 30 years in the news business.

We will miss her. We know you will too. But we’re happy that she can finally sleep in and spend more time with her family – especially her three adorable grandchildren.

This week we celebrate Amy and all the incredible stories she has shared over the years. We hope you will join us on this walk into the past.

As Channel 5 turns 70, we remember the 1960s RnB showcase Night Train

When I was younger, people of my generation spent part of their weekends watching music shows like American Bandstand and Soul Train. This was before the age of music videos. A few years before Soul Train was syndicated out of Chicago, another syndicated R&B show was taped in Nashville on NewsChannel 5. Night Train aired in the ’60s and featured what may have been the first TV appearance of legendary guitarist Jimi Hendrix. Forrest Sanders looks back at the station’s history.
