‘He has no class’: Former governor angers Dan Campbell after Lions beat Cowboys

Most people who tell stories about Dan Campbell hold him in high regard, including opposing players and coaches after a loss. However, former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie sees it differently.

During an appearance on Chris “Mad Dog” Russo’s podcast this week, Christie, a staunch Cowboys fan, criticized Campbell’s character over the Lions’ 47-9 win over the Cowboys on Sunday at AT&T Stadium.

“This is Dan Campbell; He has no class, he never has,” Christie said on the show. “So it’s okay. Look, Dan Campbell, that’s how he is, and what goes around comes around. I just think it’s misguided, you know, Dan Campbell is angry because the referees made a bad call in the game a year ago. Well then, you know, run the piece on Roger Goodell. The Cowboys had nothing to do with the play being called incorrectly.

“The Cowboys didn’t pose a challenge. It was a decision by the referees. The Lions were hurt by this. The Cowboys benefited from this. But that’s why you want to do your best right now while you beat the hell out of these guys and take it. That’s not what professionals do, but it’s his prerogative. It is the reputation he will carry with him. Honestly, I think most people think that’s his rep now anyway.”

Last season, the Lions suffered a controversial 20-19 loss to the Cowboys – also at AT&T Stadium – after offensive tackle Taylor Decker’s 2-point conversion was negated when it was ruled that Decker was an ineligible receiver.

Referee Brad Allen said Lions offensive lineman Dan Skipper reported as the eligible receiver, not Decker, according to the game’s pool report.

Since then, the Lions have jeopardized NFL officiating by making Skipper eligible to play in almost every game. The Lions also ran several trick plays with their offensive linemen against the Cowboys in Sunday’s game.

While Lions quarterback Jared Goff was leading 34-9 with 7:17 left in the third, he attempted a touchdown pass that failed to connect with Decker.

About seven minutes later, with the Lions leading 37-9, they executed another trick play – a hook and ladder in which Lions receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown sidestepped the ball to offensive tackle Penei Sewell for one touchdown played. However, the play was called back after center Frank Ragnow was illegally sacked downfield.

The Lions also lined up Skipper for one play at wide receiver.

The 47-9 loss was the Cowboys’ worst home defeat since owner Jerry Jones purchased the team in 1989.
