Cheney accompanies Harris on the campaign trail in suburban Detroit

Royal oak – Several hundred people stood in line outside the Royal Oak Music Theater awaiting the arrival of Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris and her traveling companion, former U.S. Rep. Liz Cheney, who are expected to appear together on the campaign trail nearly two weeks before election day .

The stage is surrounded by three large banners reading “Country Over Party” and “New Way Forward,” which have been displayed at other events featuring Cheney and other Republican supporters of Harris, the vice president from California.

The event was attended by Democratic U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens of Birmingham, Farmington Hills Mayor Theresa Rich and Maria Shriver, a journalist and member of the Kennedy family. Shriver, a former first lady of California, moderates a discussion with Harris and Cheney.

Samantha Walser, 32, of Lansing, got a front-row seat on the upper stage to see Harris and Cheney on Monday afternoon. Walser said she came because Cheney is a good bridge between the two political parties and the world needs more examples of such bipartisanship.

“Liz Cheney is a great independent thinker. She makes great arguments and this is more of a conversation event, to see her in that environment and have those conversations,” Walser said she came to the Royal Oak venue.

Walser spoke with Shriver, who approached Wasler to talk to her about why she came to the event and her support for Harris. “Well, I didn’t see that,” Wasler laughed.

Paul Carethers II secured a seat on the ground floor, just a few rows back, so he could hear the conversation between Harris and Cheney. Carethers says he already voted for Harris but came to learn more about where both women stand on a range of issues.

“I want to hear more about what they have to say about their policies, particularly how they will impact Michigan,” the Ann Arbor resident said. “I know a little about what they’re planning. It would be nice to hear it in person.”

Cheney, a former Republican congresswoman from Wyoming and a fierce critic of Trump, has endorsed Harris and joined her in the campaign. She is the daughter of former Republican Vice President Dick Cheney and was the top Republican lawmaker on the House committee that investigated the events during the riot at the US Capitol on January 6, 2021.

Cheney’s opposition to Trump led to his ouster from Congress in a 2022 Republican primary in Wyoming.

At the time of the Jan. 6 attack, she was part of the House Republican leadership but broke with most of her caucus over Trump’s responsibilities. She lost her leadership post and was one of the few Republicans willing to serve on the Jan. 6 committee appointed by the Democrats who then controlled the House.

Cheney isn’t the only Republican supporting Harris. More than 100 former Republican Party officials and officials joined Harris last week in Washington Crossing, Pennsylvania, not far from where General George Washington led hundreds of troops across the Delaware River to a major victory in the Revolutionary War.

Cheney, who also speaks at the Detroit Economic Club on Tuesday, will make three joint appearances with Harris in Oakland County; Chester County, Pennsylvania in the southern suburbs of Philadelphia and Waukesha County, Wisconsin. in the western suburbs of Milwaukee.

The Harris campaign is planning another wave of rallies this week after Harris held three in Grand Rapids, Lansing and Waterford Township on Friday and a rally with rapper Lizzo in Detroit on Saturday. Trump also made three campaign stops in Metro Detroit on Friday, concluding with a rally at Huntington Place.

Former President Barack Obama will campaign for Harris on Tuesday in Detroit. As a Democratic candidate, Obama won Michigan in 2008 and 2012. Obama’s closest presidential race in Michigan came in 2012, when he defeated Detroit-born Republican Mitt Romney by about 9 percentage points, or 54-45%.

Michelle Obama, the former first lady, is expected to campaign with Harris in Michigan on Saturday, the opening day of early in-person voting nationwide. Details of this campaign event have not yet been announced.
