Clear skies and a cool night ahead

Eastern North Carolina is experiencing a calm period as high pressure continues to dominate the weather. Residents can look forward to clear skies, seasonally cool nights, and pleasant weekend afternoons. Overnight lows will fall to the low 40s inland, with some isolated areas dropping into the upper 30s. Coastal areas will remain slightly warmer, with lows in the 50s due to outflow from the Atlantic.

On Sunday, temperatures will rise to the high 70s inland and 60 degrees along the coast, with mostly sunny skies. Northeasterly winds create windy conditions near shore, resulting in elevated sea levels and hazardous boating conditions. A small craft warning is in effect, with waves expected to reach between 5 and 10 feet, particularly north of Ocracoke.

Minor coastal flooding is a concern due to persistent north-easterly winds and ongoing king tides. Areas along Hatteras Island are most at risk, and ocean flooding is already occurring in vulnerable locations. The high surf warning remains in effect and dangerous surf is expected for the northern Outer Banks.

Looking ahead, dry and calm weather will continue until midweek as high pressure continues to prevail. A dry cold front is forecast for Thursday, bringing cooler air but little rain. Highs will return to near normal by the end of October, with temperatures ranging from the mid 60s to low 70s.
