Wilson shows that Tomlin is a deep thinker

• Those who wanted Fields to continue starting ahead of Wilson based their argument on, among other things, the fact that Fields would do better working behind what is currently a makeshift offensive line.

Now Wilson was under pressure, especially early in the game. But the Jets finished the game with five quarterback hits and a sack.

Wilson showed he still has more than the mobility to escape a pass rush. He may not be running 40 or 50 yards at this point in his career, but he’s not a statue in your pocket either.

It also helps that Jaylen Warren is healthy again to complement Harris. Warren had 44 rushing yards in that game and did his usual standup job as a pass protector on third downs.

The two running backs – Cordarrelle Patterson waiting in the starting blocks – have enough rush to keep this offense running the ball well.

“This is the ultimate team sport,” Harris said. If I go down there and get beat up and Jaylen comes in and makes a big run, he eats. That’s a big recognition for him, you know what I mean?”

• The Steelers entered this game having allowed the fewest yards after contact in the league to opposing offensive linemen. Overall they are a good team.

That certainly hurt Hall a little. His six receptions probably covered about 20 air yards total, and he ended up with 103 total receiving yards.

But sometimes you have to trust your opponent to be good. And Hall might be the slipperiest runner in the NFL when he gets the ball in space.

Don’t kill the defense too much for this performance.

• To its credit, though, the defense was largely an afterthought to Rodgers’ newest toy, Davante Adams.

In fact, Adams and Garrett Wilson, who entered this game with 41 catches, second-most in the NFL, combined for eight catches on 18 targets for 91 yards. Adams had three catches for 30 yards on nine targets.

That’s good work from the cornerbacks. And with Donte Jackson out in the second quarter with a shoulder injury, James Pierre stepped in and was up to the task.

“They have really good players, Wilson, Davante Adams, they’re a really good receiving team,” Pierre said. “Just being in the NFL, you have to be ready. You have to have the attitude with which you play. The coach said to jump in and do the same thing the other guys did. It’s just a matter of being ready.”

• An additional thought on this. Since the 1974 Super Bowl team was being honored at this game on the 50th anniversary of their victory over the Vikings, things were a little busier than usual.

The crowd was electric. And the players saw these heroes setting the table for everything that followed, and they responded.

“I always respect it. I had a chance to talk to Joe (Greene), everyone actually, Mel (Blount), Donnie (Shell),” Heyward said. “They are so grateful to us. They are open. You have to rise to the occasion. Wearing this patch on your jersey shouldn’t just be a reminder. You have to honor these guys, and hopefully our game reflects that.”
