Was it a bold move by the Steelers to start Russell Wilson? Coach Mike Tomlin gives a funny answer after the win over the Jets

Russell Wilson engraved his name in the history books from his early days at the Pittsburgh Steelers. In his highly anticipated debut on Sunday night, Wilson led the Steelers to a commanding 37-15 victory over the Steelers New York Jets. This victory not only increased the team’s record to 5-2, but also marked an important milestone for the franchise.

Mike Tomlin weighs in on the decision to use Russell Wilson in the Steelers’ win over the Jets

Russell Wilson’s debut as the Steelers’ starting quarterback was historic in more ways than one. He became the first quarterback to lead the Steelers to 30 or more points in his starting debut since they began tracking quarterback starts in 1950. His performance on the field was nothing short of impressive, with 264 passing yards, two touchdown throws and a rushing touchdown to top it off. He completed 16 of his 29 passes and avoided any interceptions in a game where the Steelers offense was in full swing.

The decision to use Wilson in place of incumbent quarterback Fields caused quite a stir, especially given Fields’ relatively successful start to the season. But Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin, known for making difficult decisions, quickly silenced critics. After the game, former NFL wide receiver and Pittsburgh native Brandon Marshall even asked Tomlin if starting Wilson was one of his boldest moves as a coach. To which Tomlin replied coolly, “That’s why I’m well compensated,” acknowledging the importance of his decisions and their impact on the team.

As one of the NFL’s longest-serving and highest-paid head coaches, Tomlin’s leadership and decision-making are constantly under scrutiny. However, Sunday night’s win showed that his faith in Wilson, who returned from injury, was justified. The Steelers’ offense appeared revitalized and Wilson’s performance in his first start in nearly a year was a key factor in the comfortable victory.
Wilson’s strong debut not only demonstrated his ability to lead the Steelers, but also highlighted his willingness to contribute immediately after a year-long absence from the NFL. With this historic performance, Wilson quickly became a central figure in the team’s offense and an important factor in Pittsburgh’s future playoff ambitions.
