Teams have contacted Jets about WR Garrett Wilson; Jets have no interest in trading

Since the Jets acquired Davante Adams Via trade, it seemed like it was only a matter of time before the club gave away one of the other wide receivers on its depth chart. While Mike Williams was (and is) the most obvious trade candidate, but rival teams have also expressed interest in acquiring another WR.

Per ESPN’s Adam SchefterFollowing the Adams trade, several teams reached out to Jets leadership to gauge New York’s interest in a move Garrett Wilsonwho has been one of the few bright spots in Gang Green’s offense in recent seasons. Unsurprisingly, the club has rejected all such overtures.

With the soon-to-be 41-year-old Aaron Rodgers When it comes to quarterbacks and a front office and coaching staff that may be facing a “playoffs or bust” mandate, the Jets are very successful in win-now mode (an endeavor strengthened by their recent agreement to end the Edge Defender Haason Reddick‘s holdout). The long-rumored acquisition of Adams was always intended to complement Wilson, not push him off the roster, regardless of which draft capital might persuade New York to make such a move.

The No. 10 pick in the 2022 draft, Wilson posted over 1,000 receiving yards in each of his first two professional seasons, despite being far and away the best pass-catching option in an offense that relies predominantly on quarterbacks Zach Wilson. Garrett Wilson earned Offensive Rookie of the Year honors in 2022, and while he and Rodgers struggled to establish a consistent relationship in 2024, the future Hall of Fame signal-caller did so 67 times in the first six games of the year Ohio State product targeted current campaign (including a whopping 23 goals in a Week 5 loss to the Vikings).

In week 6, with Todd Downing Rodgers and Wilson made their first offensive plays for the Jets, connecting eight times on 10 targets, resulting in 107 yards and a score for the third-year receiver. With Adams now drawing the attention of opposing defenses, the club is hoping Wilson will be even more productive and help fuel the playoff push.

According to Schefter, the teams interested in moving for Wilson were also willing to extend him next offseason. He would then have three years of service and would therefore be eligible for a second contract. The wide receiver market is booming, and at some point in the near future Wilson will likely be one of the many beneficiaries of this trend. Whether his next contract comes from the Jets remains to be seen, but it would be a shock if he doesn’t stay with the club for at least the rest of the season.

Schefter also points out that at one point the Raiders were interested in having Williams return in an Adams trade. Las Vegas General Manager Tom Telescowas, of course, the Chargers’ GM when he drafted Williams and later approved him a $20 million-per-year extension, so his appreciation for Williams’ play is clear. Still, it seems clear that 2024 is a transition year for the Raiders, which is why signing a player who is now on a one-year deal would have been an odd decision. Ultimately Telesco and Jets GM Joe Douglas agreed to a conditional third-round pick as the price for Adams, with New York also agreeing to cover the remainder of Adams’ 2024 salary.

While Williams will not be subbed ahead of tonight’s game against the Steelers, the Jets will open to dealing with him before the November 5th deadline. Pittsburgh, the Saints and the Chargers everyone has expressed interest in his service.
