The deal came together pretty quickly. Understanding its nuances will likely take more time.

According to a source with knowledge of Haason Reddick’s revised contract, the Jets will forego more than $12 million in fines if Reddick agrees to honor his contract for the remainder of the season.

Reddick will not receive back pay for the eight weeks he missed. The $12 million includes bonus money he missed by missing training camp and eight regular-season games. This also includes fines for missing preseason games equal to one regular season game check ($791,667) for each of the three preseason games missed.

As for the pre-season game inspection fines, there appears to be an unresolved question (which has turned into a formal complaint) as to whether they can be waived. The Jets are willing to waive her if the league and the NFL Players Association agree she can be waived. (As we currently understand, the question is whether the trade that sent Reddick from the Eagles to the Jets exempts the contract from the limited range of deals that carry non-waivable fines.)

The $2 million in daily fines for training camp evaders will not be (and most likely cannot be) waived. However, Reddick can earn the money back through incentives.

It’s unclear who did the most work to make this happen. The big difference, however, is that owner Woody Johnson was not directly involved in the situation before coach Robert Saleh was fired. After Saleh was fired, Woody became very involved. This suggests the Jets did something they wouldn’t have done before to get the deal done.

We’re definitely hoping to get a full breakdown of the new deal to better understand how this will work. In this case, a full reading of the final contract may be necessary to best understand the situation.
