Justin Jefferson on the importance of TJ Hockenson, his success against the Detroit Lions in the past and more

After a dominant 47-9 victory over the Dallas Cowboys at AT&T Stadium, the Detroit Lions (4-1) continue their two-game road trip by visiting the undefeated Minnesota Vikings (5-0) in Detroit’s first divisional game of the year .

The Vikings are one of two remaining undefeated teams (Kansas City) and are coming off their bye week. The winner of Sunday afternoon’s game at US Bank Stadium will gain early control of the NFC North, the only league in the NFL in which all four teams have a winning record.

Vikings report: Minnesota is looking for its first 6-0 start since 2009, where they ultimately advanced to the NFC Championship game. Under third-year head coach Kevin O’Connell, the Vikings currently lead the NFC North and are the only undefeated team in the NFC.

Offensively, the Vikings rely on the passing attack, led by quarterback Sam Darnold and wide receiver Justin Jefferson. Darnold enters Week 7 ranked fourth with 11 touchdowns, four of which went to Jefferson. Jefferson ranks sixth with 450 receiving yards on 26 receptions despite playing one fewer game than most before him.

Defensive coordinator Brian Flores is leading the defensive unit in his second year at the position. The Vikings enter Week 7 leading the league with 11 interceptions. They are a very blitz-heavy defense and rank third in the league with 20 sacks. Minnesota has scored a league-high 106 times in five games (41.1 percent of its snaps), 31 more times than Denver, which ranked second with 75 in six games before Thursday’s game against New Orleans.

As for injuries, Minnesota could be without running back Aaron Jones, who is a week-to-week option since he suffered a hamstring injury two weeks ago against the Jets in London. Earlier this week, the team traded for Texas running back Cam Akers. Minnesota’s rushing offense ranks 20th with 115.4 yards per game.

Last meeting: In Week 18 last season, with the NFC North Division already won, the Detroit Lions completed the series victory over Minnesota with a 30-20 victory at Ford Field. The Lions never trailed and built a quick 13-0 lead after a touchdown pass from Jared Goff to tight end Sam LaPorta and a short TD run by Jahmyr Gibbs.

Minnesota countered with two field goals and trailed 13-6 at halftime, but second-half touchdown scores — a 1-yard run by David Montgomery and a 70-yard reception by Amon-Ra St. Brown — provided the scoring for enough cushion to defend, defeated the Vikings and Detroit secured third place in the playoffs.

1. When it comes to breaking even or winning the turnover battle, Minnesota is 22-0 under O’Connell.

2. Minnesota’s 11 interceptions lead the league through six weeks, and that number matches its total for the entire 2023 season.

3. Darnold has a passer rating of 148.72 in blitz passing situations and completed 18 of 26 passes for 315 yards and three touchdowns.

Statistics are based on weeks 1-6, followed by rank.
