Lions injury update: David Montgomery is suffering from a knee injury and is questionable to return

It was a terrible start for the Detroit Lions against the MInnesota Vikings, and things only got worse for them early in the first quarter. After falling behind 10-0, the Lions tried to convert a third-and-1 with running back David Montgomery. Montgomery not only failed, but also injured himself in the game. Eventually, Montgomery was helped off the field but was unable to put much pressure on his leg.

UPDATE: The Lions consider Montgomery’s return questionable due to a knee injury.

While we don’t have an update on Montgomery’s injury yet, it would be a devastating blow to Detroit’s offense. Just last week, the Lions signed Montgomery to a two-year extension, knowing he is a key part of their offensive identity.

“He’s too similar to us. He’s too much a part of us,” Campbell said this week. “He is everything we are looking for. And we’re not just going to let this guy go. That’s why I’m glad he’s staying here.”

Through five games, Montgomery has recorded 351 rushing yards and six rushing touchdowns, for a career average of 4.7 yards per carry.

If Montgomery can’t return, the Lions will have to rely heavily on second-year running back Jahmyr Gibbs. Craig Reynolds and rookie Sione Vaki are also active for the Lions.

We will update this post as soon as there is an update from the team.

UPDATE 2: According to Nolan Bianchi, out of the blue, Montgomery is in the medical tent working on an exercise bike.
