    There are less than three weeks until the end of Daylight Saving Time (DST) in Illinois.

    This year, clocks in most of the United States moved forward one hour at 2 a.m. local time on March 10. Hawaii and Arizona do not observe daylight saving time and do not change their clocks. However, the Navajo Nation in northeastern Arizona follows daylight saving time.

    Canada moved its clocks forward one hour on the same day, but most European countries began daylight saving time on March 31.

    Daylight saving time ends on November 3, 2024 at 2 a.m. This is the first Sunday in November. This marks the return to standard time.

    According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, daylight saving time begins on the second Sunday in March and ends on the first Sunday in November. In 2024, clocks in Illinois will go back one hour at 2 a.m. on November 3rd. In 2025, daylight saving time will begin again on March 9th and end on November 2nd.

    When will daylight saving time become permanent?

    Lawmakers in the United States have been considering a measure to make daylight saving time permanent since 2018, when Senator Marco Rubio introduced the Sunshine Protection Act, which would eliminate seasonal time changes. Several versions of the bill were introduced, but none passed in the U.S. House of Representatives. Rubio introduced an updated version of the Sunshine Protection Act in the 118th yearTh Congress last March. The bill was referred to the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation.

    U.S. federal law continues to prohibit states from permanently adopting daylight saving time.

    There seems to be a general trend around the world to eliminate seasonal time changes. The Pew Research Center found that about half of the world’s countries no longer observe daylight saving time. The most recent countries to abolish daylight saving time are Azerbaijan, Jordan, Namibia, Russia, Samoa, Syria, Turkey and Uruguay. Mexico abolished daylight saving time in 2022, but major cities near the U.S. border were exempt from the change. Egypt has abolished and reinstated daylight saving time several times.
