“Celebrate every finish line crossed” GR Marathon offers options for all runners

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The 1st annual University of Michigan Health-West Grand Rapids Marathon will take place on Sunday, October 20th.

Thousands of runners are ready for one of West Michigan’s most comprehensive events; The organizers proudly claim that the race was designed “by runners, for runners.” The flat, fast course prepares participants to achieve personal bests and qualify for the Boston Marathon.

“We designed it to welcome everyone, from the first-time marathon runner to the experienced runner looking to become a Boston qualifier. No one is a stranger on this route and we celebrate every crossing of the finish line,” says race director Don Kern.

The race starts on Sunday, but it’s a weekend-long event: The Shakeout Run is at 8 a.m., the Grand Rapids Kids Marathon is on Saturday at 2:30 p.m., and there are also events throughout the day Stage presentations from local experts.

For the main event, an early start is planned for the Velocity Challenged, followed by the starts of the wheelchair and handbike divisions, the opening ceremony and the official start at 8 a.m.

“The Grand Rapids Marathon reflects everything we value as a community – support, encouragement and a shared commitment to wellness,” said Greg Meyer, chief community officer of UM Health-West and 1983 Boston Marathon champion. “This event brings us together to celebrate fitness and personal goals, and it’s a great way for our city to show its incredible spirit.”

Depending on the race chosen, runners must cross the finish line between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.
