Alec Baldwin is publicly returning to “SNL” … but not as Donald Trump

CNN

Alec Baldwin reappeared on the latest episode of Saturday Night Live, but not in his previous role as the impersonation of former US President Donald Trump.

This time in the cold open, Baldwin played FOX News anchor Bret Baier, who questioned Maya Rudolph as Vice President Kamala Harris in a parody of her interview that aired on the network last week.

While Baldwin famously appeared as Trump on “SNL” in recent seasons, “SNL” actor James Austin Johnson more recently portrayed the former president, despite speculation that Baldwin would return this season ahead of the election.

Throughout the FOX News interview parody of “SNL,” Baldwin as Baier and Rudolph as Harris discussed political issues such as immigration and abortion.

When it came to immigration, Rudolph, as Harris, talked about all the cartels she felt had taken down, joking, “If I had been in ‘Breaking Bad,’ it would have ended in three episodes.”

Baldwin as Baier continually interrupted Rudolph as Harris throughout the interview. At another point, he mocked her for only answering questions because she was “just looking for a viral moment” – with Rudolph then turning to another camera to create fake TikTok clips.

They also highlighted one of the more viral moments of the real-life interview, in which Rudolph as Harris and Baldwin as Baier argued about playing the wrong Trump clip.

Dana Carvey, in the role of President Joe Biden, also appeared during the sketch, but Andy Samberg, who appeared on the long-running sketch show this season as Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff, was noticeably absent from the cold open.

This weekend’s episode was hosted by Michael Keaton, star of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice and the new Goodrich. He has previously hosted three times, most recently in 2015, and made a cameo appearance on the show in 2019. Billie Eilish was the musical guest.

John Mulaney will host the next episode of “Saturday Night Live” with Chappell Roan as musical guest on November 2nd, just before Election Day.

“SNL” airs at 11:30 p.m. EDT/8:30 p.m. PDT on NBC.
