Michigan State is pleased with the win over Iowa and turns its focus to Michigan

East Lansing – This was the decisive victory in Jonathan Smith’s short time as head coach at Michigan State.

However, there will be no long celebration after the Spartans’ commanding 34:20 victory over Iowa on Saturday night at Spartan Stadium. When the team meets on Sunday, the focus will turn to main rival Michigan.

Michigan State (4-3, 2-2 Big Ten) plays Michigan (4-3, 2-2) next Saturday night in a battle of premier head coaches in Smith and the Wolverines’ Sherrone Moore.

“We’re going to turn the page pretty quickly for next week,” Smith said. “One of the best things about college football is the rivalry games, and this game means a lot.”

While Michigan State ended its three-game losing streak on Saturday night, Michigan lost a second straight game earlier in the day. 21-7 at Illinois.

Michigan has rattled off two straight wins in this series and dominated both times, including 49-0 last year en route to the national championship.

But these are two very different teams this season, and the Spartans appear to be headed in the right direction this time around after dominating Iowa in all three phases on Saturday.

“It’s definitely momentum,” said Montorie Foster Jr., a senior receiver who scored a touchdown in the win over Iowa and was the first 100-yard receiving game of his career. “You know, our goal is to go 6-0 (in the second half of the season). That’s what we’re trying to do. So, you know, it’s definitely a momentum for this game.”

“I definitely can’t wait to get to that game and get out there that night.”

The Michigan State-Michigan game will be the first for freshman receiver Nick Marsh, but he knows all about it since he’s from Detroit and played his high school ball at River Rouge.

Still, he wasn’t ready to look forward immediately after Saturday night’s game, in which he also had over 100 receiving yards with 113 yards on eight catches. It was his second 100-yard receiving game of the season.

Marsh nearly scored a late touchdown, evading an Iowa defender with a neat spin move before diving into the end zone. This was originally ruled a touchdown, but after review, it was dismissed on the 1st play. Michigan State scored on the next play to seal the deal against Iowa. Which Michigan State can celebrate for a minute?

“I just want to enjoy this game,” said Marsh, who wasn’t particularly eager to talk about the Michigan game just yet.

“And when the time comes, we’ll talk about it.”

Iowa marked the start of a seemingly discouraging second half for Michigan State, which now faces Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Purdue and Rutgers as it looks to secure its first bowl appearance since 2021.
