NY Yankees vs. Guardians live score, updates, lineups for ALCS Game 5

play

CLEVELAND — It’s been 5,473 days since the Yankees won a pennant, which is pretty much pinstripe eternity.

The 15-year wait could end tonight against the Guardians at Progressive Field.

“It feels like nothing until we get it done,” Giancarlo Stanton said late Friday night after the Yankees’ wild 8-6 win in Game 4 that gave them a lead of three in this best-of-seven AL Playing one on one secured championship series.

Both bullpens were maxed out, but the Yankees will benefit from Luke Weaver in today’s Game 5 after he wasn’t used (but warmed up late) in Game 4.

For starters, it’s Carlos Rodon vs. Cleveland’s Tanner Bibee. And here we go…

And. Was. Bound.

On a 3-2 slider, Giancarlo Stanton goes 446 feet for a two-run home run, and the score is 2-2 in the sixth. Now just give him the ALCS MVP.

Bibee is out, Cade Smith is in. Stanton has now hit a home run in three straight games here and in four of the five in this ALCS.

A place for Aaron Judge

Gleyber and Soto opened the sixth with singles from Bibee and here’s Aaron Judge…

…which opens up a double play. Cade Smith is now preparing for Cleveland. Here’s Stanton (0-2, 2 Ks tonight, but you know about the recent home runs).

Carlos Rodon’s night is over

Rodon lasted 4.2 innings and exits, with runners on second and third in the fifth, two outs and Mark Leiter Jr. trying to escape the jam against the dangerous Jose Ramirez.

The night ends for Rodon after David Fry’s bloop hits the triangle of Verdugo, Volpe and Judge, just behind Judge’s jump attempt…

…first base was open (Fry went to second on the throw-in) and Aaron Boone decides to intentionally walk Ramirez. It pays off when Leiter Jr. gets Lane Thomas on a grounder. After five it is 2-0 for the Guards.

Cleveland adds

Rodon had just blown a 99 mph fastball past Brayan Rocchio for third, but the great Steven Kwan struck out Andres Gimenez (double) with two outs, making it 2-0 Guardians.

Mark Leiter Jr. was just starting to warm up in the Yanks’ bullpen here in the fifth inning.

A pitcher’s duel so far

Anthony Volpe’s sharp leadoff single to center in the fifth ends Bibee’s streak of 10 straight rebounds, but Austin Wells catches a DP (first confirmed by a replay challenge) and it’s still 1-0 Cleveland.

Hey, Tanner…

That’s four scoreless innings for Tanner Bibee, giving the Guardians a 1-0 lead.

Bibee has retired 10 batters in a row since throwing a pitch that grazed Jazz Chisholm’s foot in the first inning, and he hasn’t scored since Soto’s double – which resulted in Gleyber being thrown out at the plate.

The Yankees may regret helping Bibee acclimate after Torres and Soto opened with a sure-fire offense for the seventh time in the Yanks’ nine postseason games (yet the Yanks scored a total of four runs).

By three in Cleveland

Rodon hadn’t walked a batter in three playoff starts (11.2 innings) before that leadoff walk to No. 9 hitter Brayan Rocchio in the third, but the left-hander got the next three batters. Still 1-0, Guards.

So far in his 12.2 postseason innings, Rodon has 21 strikeouts, including five tonight – he got third strikeouts on two fastballs, a cutter, a slider and a changeup, so the variety of things is there.

Count pitches

After two innings, Rodon has struck out 41 pitches. Ideally, the Yankees would like to pitch the same six innings (93 pitches) he delivered in Game 2 because of the bullpen’s workload.

Our guess is that Tommy Kahnle is unlikely to be available as he threw 44 shots in Games 3 and 4 the last two nights, and they would rather not use Clay Holmes for the third straight game (27 shots in games 3 and 4). ).

Cleveland on the board

Credit to Bo Naylor with a great AB, with a two-out RBI double driving Josh (infield hit) for a 1-0 Guardians lead in the second inning.

Bo Naylor fouled four 2-2 pitches (slider, fastball, fastball, slider) before launching a fastball into the right field corner in the first over of the game.

Carlos Rodon had a solid start

A good start from Carlos Rodon, a quick first inning with two Ks.

Of his Game 1 win over Cleveland (6 IP, 1 ER), he said, “I paid attention to where I was emotionally,” channeling his inner Gerrit Cole after he fired up in his ALDS start against Kansas City had given.

A lot of noise, a lot of nothing

Once again, Gleyber Torres and Juan Soto start a game by reaching safely…more on that later.

But the first misplay stems from third-base coach Luis Rojas’ too-early, too-aggressive deployment of Torres from first base after Soto’s double to right-center.

Torres is thrown out at the plate, the Americans man the bases (Judge and Jazz are hit by pitches), and Rizzo goes to the line.

Nestor Cortes hosts a live session

Earlier Saturday afternoon, left-hander Nestor Cortes (flexor tendon) pitched another simulated inning against live batters.

Cortes is “very strong moving forward,” manager Aaron Boone said. “If we get through this round, he has an excellent chance of being in the game” and making the World Series roster.

Boone said Saturday’s 20-pitch session went well. Cortes is scheduled to do another live event early this week, “and if that goes well, we’ll probably feel good” about including him in the next round.

The manager didn’t speculate on a possible World Series roster, but if the Yanks stick with 12 pitchers, Cortes could potentially replace Marcus Stroman, who is taking over in emergency relief but has been inactive for the first four ALCS games.

Giancarlo Stanton cleaning up

Giancarlo Stanton was moved from No. 5 to the mop-up spot against the right-hander Bibee, giving Aaron Judge better protection despite having four lefties in the bottom five of the rankings.

Aaron Boone favored the left-right balance and promoted Jazz Chisholm to cleanup in Game 4 (he replaced the struggling Austin Wells, who then went No. 8), but “I feel like… it’s a heavyweight fight now.” and Stanton delivered some real haymakers.

Stanton has hit four home runs in his last six playoff games since ALDS Game 3. And his three-run throw in ALCS Game 4 was Stanton’s 15th career postseason home run in 35 career postseason games.
