Earlier in the afternoon, head coach Dusty May addressed Michigan reporters about his team. Here is some of what he said.

The Michigan coach began with an opening statement. Michigan has two tournaments coming up, one in Detroit against Oakland on October 20th and one at the Crisler Center against Toledo on October 25th.

“We can look forward to the next few weeks as our health gets back into shape,” May said. “Our players have the opportunity to see someone other than their teammates at practice every day.

“Usually at this time of year the boys don’t feel like training against each other anymore. They want to play against another team. So we’re excited that that will be the case here in the next week or so.”

On Friday, Michigan players will complete pro day and compete in a pitched battle in front of scouts and media. May gave a preview of what the day will mean for his Wolverines.

“It’s actually very similar to normal practice for us,” May said. “We’ll be doing some target practice, competitive target practice. We’ve added some that are similar to the NBA Combine workouts. They become firmer, a little lighter than usual, so that they appear a little fresher.

“And then we play one against one, we play three against three, we play five against five. The great thing about the NBA now is they love watching your guys play. You enjoy watching them play against the competition and bodies. As far as structure goes, it will be very, very normal. Of course the players will have a little skip in their step, just like they will when there are fans in the building.”

May was asked about the vision for the Michigan team’s identity.

“We’ll definitely find out more as the season progresses,” May noted. “You don’t know your warts. For example, if we’re having a great practice and shooting well, your first thought as a coach is, “Man, we’re not fighting over shots,” or we’re giving up too many threes – whatever the case may be. So you never really know.

“I think the core of our program will be what pace do we play at, how do we move the basketball and do we give the impression that we enjoy sharing it?” And do we play with great force defensively, Energy and passion?”
