Michigan suffers its second straight loss and drops to 4-3 in 2024 with a 21-7 loss at Illinois

A bye week wasn’t enough to heal Michigan’s struggling offense.

Michigan played an Illinois team that wore 1920s-style jerseys in honor of Red Grange. Michigan’s offense seemed stuck in the 1920s, as the Wolverines scored just one goal in a 21-7 loss in Champaign.

Michigan quarterback Jack Tuttle continued to struggle. He completed 20 of 32 pass attempts for 208 yards, but 63 of those came in the final minute of the game after Illinois claimed the victory. He had zero passing touchdowns and one interception.

The seven points are the fewest the Wolverines have scored in a game since a 31-0 loss to Notre Dame on September 6, 2014.

The second straight loss for the Wolverines marks the first time since 2020 that they have lost two games in a row. Their two-touchdown loss at Illinois came despite them having an extra week to prepare for the Fighting Illini on Oct. 5 following their 27-17 loss to Washington.

Michigan is just 4-3 on the season, with their third loss likely eliminating them from the College Football Playoff. The Wolverines went 2-2 in Big Ten play, with the second conference loss likely knocking them out of contention for the Big Ten Championship.

The path won’t get any easier for the reigning national champions as the season progresses. After hosting Michigan State next week in their first rivalry game of the season, the Wolverines will face three ranked opponents in November as they host Oregon on November 2nd before traveling to Indiana on November 9th and Ohio State on November 30th their home finale against Northwestern in between (November 23).
