    Francis Ngannou ends his nearly three-year absence from mixed martial arts in Saturday’s “PFL: Battle of the Giants,” where he takes on reigning PFL heavyweight champion Renan Ferreira.

    Ngannou has not fought in an MMA circuit since January 2022, when he defeated Ciryl Gane at UFC 270 to defend his heavyweight title. In May 2023, the 38-year-old signed a contract with the Professional Fighters League, giving him an equity stake in the league and the freedom to pursue boxing.

    As a boxer, Ngannou beat Tyson Fury en route to a split decision loss in October 2023, but struggled to a second-round knockout loss to former heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua last March.

    Ferreira, meanwhile, is the 2023 PFL heavyweight champion and needed just 21 seconds to defeat Ryan Bader in his last fight. The 34-year-old Brazilian has a career MMA record of 13-3, with three failures to compete.
