Declan Rice criticized Arsenal for their “naivety” this season following their 2-0 defeat to Bournemouth which saw them reduced to 10 men for the third time this season.

The game at the Vitaly Stadium took a turn in the 30th minute when William Saliba was sent off for a foul on Evanilson near the halfway line following a bad pass from Leandro Trossard. The France international was initially shown a yellow card before a VAR review revealed it was upgraded to a red.

Bolstered by their man advantage, Bournemouth began to play with more attacking intent, breaking through in the 70th minute with a well-worked goal from Ryan Christie, before a penalty from Justin Kluivert condemned Arsenal to their first defeat of the season.

“We kicked ourselves in the foot three times in eight games and got away with it at home to Brighton and away to Manchester City. “Bournemouth kept trying and made it 2-0,” Rice told Sky Sports after the game.

“I’m proud of the players who fight, even with 10 men, but the naivety, we have to stop making mistakes because you want to have 11 players for 90 minutes and that’s how you win football games.”

“With 10 men we showed a lot of character and personality to stay in the game. The big chance went to (Gabriel) Martinelli and the goalkeeper recognized it and made a great save, and a minute later, usually a routine that we are so strong at, we did it.

“We can’t make stupid mistakes. You always need all of your best players on the pitch. Faith is so great and we will stick together. This is football, whatever happens, the most important thing is that you stick together and stay in the right direction.”

Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta also missed Martinelli’s chance when the Brazil international fired past Kepa Arrizabalaga from close range.

“We had a big chance and moment in the game to score and get a different result and then we conceded a goal. We try to stick to the rules. The three (red cards) were different and three very different results,” Arteta said.

“The team tried, the performance with 10 men was fantastic, but today it wasn’t enough to win the game. It took us a while to understand what we had to do in the first 15 minutes, then we won the game, but after 30 minutes the game changed.
