Dallas radio hosts respond to Jerry Jones after viral Cowboys interview

Three Dallas radio hosts who felt the wrath of Jerry Jones this week said the Cowboys owner suffered a record loss when he appeared to jeopardize their jobs during his on-air meltdown Tuesday.

During Thursday’s episode of “Shan & RJ” on 105.3 The Fan, radio host Bobby Belt explained that Jones’ outburst over a series of questions about the Cowboys’ quiet offseason made him look like a “little man,” while host Shan Shariff said, the 82-year-old owner went to great lengths by “threatening” his livelihood.

“I think he wanted to approach it like, oh, let me show my passion… I think he got legitimately angry and then he kind of freaked out,” Belt said, recalling the tense situation. “Because here’s the thing, I think there are a few areas where there’s the showman Jerry and then there’s the really angry Jerry. And I don’t think there’s much that really upsets him, but there are a few things.

“And one of those things is, I think…obviously over the course of his relationship with Jimmy Johnson and everything else – I don’t think he likes his importance being diminished. He doesn’t like it when that happens… It was generally received as what a little man… I can’t imagine that’s what he wanted, but I think he just got angry and snapped and it was poorly received. What Jerry said was dominant and I don’t think he expected it.”

Shariff explained that he was bombarded with calls and text messages after the heated Jones interview.

“So he tried to have a tough tone but still stuck with it, that’s probably what happened… because what he did with the threatening part is for him because of the way it was taken , a worst loss ever,” Shariff said.

“On Tuesday, people in the industry called me and said they needed to contact an employment lawyer and get representation.”

Jones’ loss came two days after the Cowboys beat the Lions 47-9 at home, and the loss came on his 82nd birthday.

He told the hosts: “Your job is not to make me go through all the reasons why I did something… that’s not your job.” I’m going to get someone else to ask those questions. I’m not kidding.”

Shariff and Choppy described the interaction as “cringey,” among other things.

“It became scary for me. It got uncomfortable,” Shariff said. “The belittlement, the bullying, the cutting, the threat that was in it. Listening back, it sounded even worse.”

Choppy added: “It got scary, it did. There is no doubt about that.”

Shariff also said he was “taken aback” by Jones’ comments after the incident, telling The Athletic that he won’t be taken for a ride “by the guys I pay.”

It apparently suggested that Jones owned the station 105.3 The Fan.

Shariff vehemently denied that Jones was paying the hosts.

“It is certainly a fact that I am not being paid or compensated by Jerry Jones, which I would like to be,” Shariff said. “Audacy signs my checks…I don’t want to interfere too much in the affairs and affairs of the station.

“But with teams, a lot of times the financial arrangement is we get Jerry and (head coach Mike) McCarthy and a players show and all that; The team receives the commercial inventory when the games are broadcast. So there is no exchange of money.”

The Cowboys owner added that he was sickened by the team’s embarrassing loss to the Lions.

Choppy also claimed he received job offers after the viral Jones interview.

Jones was under pressure after the Cowboys were quiet in the offseason — and then waited until the last minute to extend quarterback Dak Prescott and star wideout CeeDee Lamb.

The Cowboys (3-3) have a bye week before facing the 49ers (3-3) on Oct. 27 in San Francisco.
