McLaren and Mercedes are bringing big upgrades to the US GP – but not Red Bull

With six Formula 1 2024 races still remaining, there are a number of Formula 1 upgrades to the United States Grand Prix that could change the pecking order once again.

Mark Hughes summarizes the upgrades announced by the teams – with Ferrari and Williams being the only teams not to bring any announced upgrades.

Red Bull

A revised bottom edge wing supposedly leads to an increase in local loading. The top of the sidepod, where it connects to the Coke bottle, has been re-profiled to allow for a more efficient cooling path and to minimize the fin area required.

Mercedes

Mercedes has made a major aerodynamic upgrade that includes the floor edge wing, floor wings and a re-profiled front wing designed to improve airflow to the rear of the car.

An additional guide vane on the bottom edge wing ensures improved vortex formation under the front floor. The newly profiled fences are intended to take full advantage of this.

The front wing has less flap twist throughout the span, reducing the disruptive effect further downstream of the wake.

The front upper control arm fairing was re-profiled as part of this entire scheme. The lower edge of the body around the radiator inlet has been extended, allowing cooling air to be directed more efficiently in a wider range of conditions.

As part of this process, an additional cooling outlet is located near the rear suspension, designed to increase the speed of the downforce-generating stream flowing over the sidepods.

McLaren

A very significant set of improvements to the McLaren based on a re-evaluation of the front wing, front suspension and front brake lines package.

The main goal of the new front wing was to improve flow conditioning downstream, thereby increasing overall air load.

The suspension shroud and new brake duct details serve the wing’s new aero pattern.

There are also minor aero changes to the rear brake ducts and the availability of a single-plane bar wing that makes a less dragging contribution to downforce.

Aston Martin

A comprehensive upgrade package based on an all-new floor body.

The new geometry of the underbody, including the central “canoe” section, combined with a new diffuser and a slightly optimized floor edge design, provides what the team believes is a significant improvement in aerodynamics.

The engine cover and Coke bottle area are also new, and the shoulder area above helps process the air to improve underbody performance.

A new front wing flap design with varying degrees of twist across the entire span as well as revised end plates are intended to improve caster control.

alpine

Like Aston, the Alpine features new floor bodywork, new detailing along the floor edge and a reshaped Coke bottle/rear engine cover to further aid underbody flow. The high-downforce rear wing flap has been re-profiled for better aero efficiency.

RB

Minor changes to the floor geometry and its connection to the main chassis in order to reduce air losses.

Clean

An all-new front wing focused on better downstream wake control is the basis for an overall optimization of these downstream aero surfaces to maximize change. This includes re-profiled shells for the front and rear suspension.

Haas

The team’s biggest upgrade since Silverstone includes a significantly deeper sidepod undercut, allowing for a more aggressive bottom expansion area, which in turn enabled a reprofiling of the diffuser. Ground fences and ground edges were re-profiled accordingly.
