While it’s thriving in the ratings, ESPN’s College game day was missing a core component on his desk.

Lee Corso, a mainstay of Matchday has missed the last two weeks since its inception as a roadshow in 1993.

“He’s back,” Herbstreit said when asked if Corso would be back during a media event at a Raising Cane’s restaurant in Austin on Friday. Outside the restaurant, a crowd of mostly Texas fans cheered the news.

Matchday is in town ahead of Saturday night’s big SEC showdown between the No. 1 Texas Longhorns and No. 5 Georgia Bulldogs. Pro golfer and Texas alum Scottie Sheffler will be in attendance as a guest picker.

Corso missed several College game day Shows from the last few years. He missed one at Utah last October due to a “family matter” and missed at least three games in 2022 (at Texas, Kansas and Clemson) because of health issues. He also returned to set in 2021 after performing from home in 2020 due to COVID-19.

College game day has hit the ground running this season, garnering high ratings, thanks in part to the additions of Pat McAfee and Nick Saban. The only thing that’s been missing lately is Corso’s iconic donning of the mascot head upon his election. This classic moment will return this Saturday.
