Coastal flooding and high surf warning valid until Sunday

Avon Pier on Thursday October 17th

An update from the National Weather Service said coastal flooding and high surf warnings were issued for the Outer Banks through midday Sunday.

According to the Coastal Flood Warning (which takes effect at 6:00 a.m. Thursday), flooding of up to two feet above ground level is expected in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways.

Due to the High Surf Advisory (which goes into effect at 6 a.m. Friday), large breaking waves of 5 to 8 feet and dangerous rip currents are expected in the surf zone.

Beach erosion and marine flooding may impact vulnerable areas along the Outer Banks, particularly areas where flooding has repeatedly caused problems (e.g., North Ocracoke Island, North Buxton, Rodanthe, and Pea Island).

The Hatteras-Ocracoke Ferry will operate on a modified schedule beginning Thursday due to weather conditions, with ferries departing approximately hourly from the Hatteras and Ocracoke terminals (similar to the late fall schedule beginning November 5).
