Fire Country Showrunner Cancels Season 3 Premiere

SPOILER ALERT! This story contains plot points from the third season premiere of Tierra del Fuego on CBS.

In the episode titled “What the Bride Said,” a disaster wreaked havoc at Diego and Gabriela’s wedding, but it wasn’t because of anything Bode did after we last saw him in the season two finale at the church saw abandoned.

Instead, a helicopter crashed through the stained glass window and overshadowed the ceremony, prompting everyone in attendance to take action and help the victims. Here, showrunner Tia Napolitano talks about why she decided to postpone the “Will You or Won’t You?” drama and what we can expect from Part 2 what we call unofficial Copter-nado.

DEADLINE How many different scenarios did you have for the wedding?

TIA NAPOLITANO We talked about many things. We really looked at what viewers know in terms of weddings that didn’t end up happening. We wanted to make sure ours was completely different. We tossed around a lot of ideas. And then one of my writers said, ‘Well, you want to have a helicopter crash into this wedding, right?’ Bring the action to the soap.’ And I said, yes, we will do that.

DEADLINE They definitely removed some disbelief by having Gabriela (Stephanie Arcila) save lives in a wedding dress. Did Stephanie ever get to the point where she said, “Hey, this is silly?”

NAPOLITAN She was playful. She loved it. And actually, they are not on duty. They are citizens who help until the firefighters on duty arrive. So it’s not like she made the decision to stop helping and get different clothes. She just continued to help and said, “Screw that dress.”

DEADLINE What is the reason Manny (Kevin Alejandro) doesn’t want his daughter to end up with Bode?

NAPOLITAN Manny loves his daughter and he is passionate about her. He loves Bode and is there for him too. But this dynamic seems to remind him of the relationship between him and Roberta, which wasn’t a completely healthy relationship. He fears that Bode and Gabriela are attracted to each other because of the things they bring out in each other…breaking the rules. They are a little dependent on each other or always push the boundaries in a bad way.

DEADLINE Why the two-parter?

NAPOLITAN Honestly, the crew built these beautiful sets. We had this whole forest and the helicopter and all this work that went into it. It was so visually spectacular that we wanted to stay in this world longer and just take advantage of everything we could.

DEADLINE: Will Gabriela Diego (Rafael de la Fuente) give an answer in the next episode?

NAPOLITAN We will surely get Gabriela’s answer.

DEADLINE They had Rick (Adam Aalderks) find out pretty quickly that Genevieve (Alix West Lefler) could be his daughter. Why?

NAPOLITAN We know we played around with fatherhood so much last season. We really have lived in the unknown for so long. So this season we wanted to provide the information, the red meat, and really understand what the consequences are from that information.

DEADLINE Max Thieriot told us this week that the new season is about legacy. Can you explain this in more detail?

NAPOLITAN We heard Bode say this in last season’s finale. He is ready to take up his legacy as a firefighter and Leone. We want to really explore what that means. The Leones are a multi-generational firefighter family. We talked about parental scars passed down from Papa Leone to Vince (Billy Burke) and possibly Bode. What does it look like to really delve into your family history and really come to terms with your origins? When we met Bode, he was a man who didn’t want to come home, and now he says: “I’m home and I’m going to concentrate fully on work, both professionally and family-wise.” We will in the series also get to know some other families. We learn a little more about Eve (Jules Latimer) and her origins. And you will see many new characters. We have already announced that we will meet a new character named Audrey (Levin Ramblin). And of course Jared Padalecki is joining us for a short time to play Captain Casey. We have a great guest cast this season.

DEADLINE Padalecki could lead to a possible spin-off. What do you like about what he brings to the table so far?

NAPOLITAN Oh, I love the character. Jared himself is wonderful. We wrote Captain Casey for him and were lucky enough to have him take the role. He’s just great when Max is on screen. They have amazing friendship chemistry. And Jared has a bit of fun. You know, Casey is sassy and encourages the adventurous side of Bode, the side of Bode that goes rogue. He encourages the side of Bode that might want to break a rule every now and then.

DEADLINE Do you need to lift more weights to prepare? for the separation of Sheriff country?

NAPOLITAN The writers room opened last week. They have their own writers and their own showrunner, and they’re doing great. We know a lot of friends there. We had a big blender. There will be a lot of collaboration. We have grids to ensure we work together. We’re in the same universe, we’re in the same city. We’ll be sending a lot of carrier pigeons back and forth to make sure we’re telling a cohesive story.
