Free Press Marathon, visits from presidential candidates make for a busy weekend

DETROIT (WXYZ) — It’s going to be a busy weekend in the Motor City. Record attendance is expected for Sunday’s Detroit Free Press Marathon, which sold out before the deadline for the first time.

But before the runners get to the start line, the race weekend begins with the expo at Huntington Place, where runners can visit vendors, purchase equipment and check in for their race.

Both former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris will be campaigning in the Detroit area on Friday, which is expected to lead to roadblocks for runners preparing for the big race.

Cathryn Grant will be taking part in the 26.2-mile race for the fourth time and had planned to come to the fair on Friday.

“It’s really cool. It’s definitely a unique race. Over the bridge and through the tunnel,” Grant said. “I’m a teacher, so I wanted to get there after school before the rush, pick up my package and then hang back on Saturday to prepare for the race. But that plan has changed a little.”

Suddenly, things will be a little busier in Huntington Place on Friday. In addition to the expo, the convention hall will also host a campaign event for former President Donald Trump. Doors for the rally open at 3 p.m., but the exhibition lasts until 7 p.m. The exhibition was moved from Hall B to Hall A on the north side of the building.

“This ensures that our participants coming to the fair don’t have to go through the security checks that people going to the political event have to go through,” said Vice President and Race Director Aaron Velthoven. “We hope there will be minimal disruption for our guests on Friday.”

Harris will visit Oakland County. Further information has not yet been released.

According to Velthoven, there will be a record number of runners this year and 50,000 people are expected at the fair over two days.

“As we have the international aspect of the course, all of our international runners must come in person and present their WHTI compliant document, which is usually a passport or enhanced driving license.”

Aside from the possibility of traffic or road closures, Velthoven recommends people avoid parking in the rooftop parking deck at Huntington on Friday. While there are usually many runners parked there, the deck is closed briefly in the early afternoon. Once it reopens, all vehicles must be inspected by the Secret Service.

The race expanded Saturday’s exhibition times to accommodate more people, hoping the last-minute adjustments would ensure the race weekend ran smoothly.

“We worked really hard to make sure there was minimal impact on Friday and I think we succeeded in that,” Velthoven said. “The energy is going to be great and we’re really excited.”

The fair takes place on Fridays from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
