You can rock the vote, but you can’t rock the Dallas Cowboys without ticking off an old politician.

Chris Christie, a former Republican governor of New Jersey and former US presidential candidate, criticized Detroit Lions coach Dan Campbell on Thursday for leading the way in last week’s 47-9 win over the Cowboys.

“This is Dan Campbell. He has no class, he never has,” Christie said Thursday on the radio show “Mad Dog Unleashed” with Chris Russo. “So it’s okay. Look, Dan Campbell, that’s who he is, and what goes around comes around.”

Campbell, one of the NFL’s most popular coaches, played three seasons for the Cowboys from 2003 to 2005 after spending four years with the New York Giants.

Christie was governor of New Jersey, home of the Giants and New York Jets, from 2010 to 2018, and yet he is a Cowboys fan “because the Giants were terrible,” he said in 2017, adding that he watched the Super Bowl Roger Staubach looked at V and “fell in love with her”.

The Lions ran three trick plays against the Cowboys last week, including a hook-and-lateral to Penei Sewell for a 37-9 lead. Campbell told players before the game that he planned to “unload the clip” after losing to the Cowboys in controversial fashion last season.

The Cowboys defeated the Lions 20-19 in Week 17 of the 2023 season after officials made a mistake executing the possible 2-point conversion. The Lions converted the pass, but Taylor Decker was penalized for illegal touch after officials incorrectly reported Dan Skipper as an eligible receiver.

“I just think it’s misguided,” Christie said in his radio interview. “Dan Campbell is angry because the referees made a wrong decision in the game a year ago. Well, then let (NFL Commissioner) Roger Goodell make the play. The Cowboys had nothing to do with the play being called incorrectly. That was it.’ It wasn’t a challenge that the referees made. The Cowboys benefited from this. That while you, you know, beat the hell out of these guys, I don’t think that’s what pros do, but it’s his prerogative. It’s the reputation he carries with him. Honestly, I think most people now think that’s his rep anyway.
