Trump talks about “White Dudes” for Harris and subpoenas

Former President Donald Trump attended Al Smith’s annual charity dinner on Thursday, an event where politicians typically attack others but also make themselves the butt of the joke.

Vice President Kamala Harris skipped dinner to campaign in Wisconsin and instead sent a comedic video with comedian Molly Shannon. During his remarks, Trump targeted Harris with jokes that were reminiscent of his insults against then-Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton.

The evening’s moderator was comedian Jim Gaffigan, who has spoken out against Trump in the past and plays Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Walz on “Saturday Night Live.”

Here are some of the highlights of the evening:

Trump couldn’t think of a self-deprecating joke: “There’s nothing to say”

The dinner, named after former New York Gov. Alfred E. Smith, benefits Catholic Charities but is known for speakers making jokes about themselves and their political opponents.

Trump teased that he would follow that tradition and tell a few “self-deprecating” jokes.

But he quickly quipped: “Nope – I don’t have anything… there’s nothing to say.”

“It’s a pleasure to be anywhere in New York these days without a summons for my appearance.”

After thanking the hosts, Trump said it was a pleasure to be there.

“It’s really fun in New York these days without a subpoena for me to appear,” he said, apparently referring to his New York hush-money trial in which he was convicted of 34 counts of falsifying business records.

Trump also mocked Mayor Eric Adams, who was recently indicted on corruption charges. After a series of acknowledgments and thanks to New York elected officials in attendance, he said, “Mayor Adams, good luck with everything, they’ve been going after you.”

Trump criticizes “White Dudes” for Harris

“There’s a group called White Dudes for Harris, have you seen that? Does anyone know…that doesn’t sound like it,” Trump said. “But I’m not worried about them because their wives and their lovers all vote for me.”

White Dudes for Harris was one of several identity groups that organized virtual fundraisers in the weeks after President Joe Biden dropped out of the race. They raised more than $4 million during their kickoff call.

Lead organizer Ross Morales Rocketto echoed the joke in a response

Host Jim Gaffigan may regret this joke after the audience gasps

Gaffigan, an actor and comedian whose Catholic faith is often featured in his jokes, was the dinner’s master of ceremonies this year.

One of his jokes elicited an audible gasp from the audience.

“During the first and only debate, President Trump talked about migrants taking and eating cats. “If you’re keeping track at home, this is the second time cat-snatching has been part of a campaign issue,” he said with gasps, groans and a few claps. “You know, I wanted to leave that out,” he said after the room fell silent.
