SUMMARY: Special teams make the difference in the Red Wings’ 5-2 loss to the Rangers

DETROIT – Head coach Derek Lalonde pointed out that special teams was the deciding factor in the Detroit Red Wings’ 5-2 loss to the New York Rangers at Little Caesars Arena on Thursday night.

The Red Wings (1-3-0; 2 points) finished 1-for-5 on the power play, which included 42 seconds of 5-on-3 play. The Rangers (3-0-1; 7 points) went 3 of 4.

“You’re going to go through stretches like that all year long, but it just happens to happen on the front end,” Lalonde said. “We knew it was going to be a difficult track but we were a little frustrated with the way some of them performed. Here too I will play our game in New York (on Monday). We probably scored points against most teams in the league the other day and tonight just because of our lack of special teams production.”

Detroit trailed 1-0 at 8:30 of the first period after Artemi Panarin picked up a pass from Vincent Trocheck and buried it on the short side.

Panarin then made it 2-0 at 15:39 of the first period when he fired a shot past Red Wings goaltender Cam Talbot on a power play from above the right faceoff circle for his second goal of the night.

Just 1:27 into the second period, Moritz Seider ripped the puck from above, cutting Detroit’s deficit to 2-1. JT Compher and Lucas Raymond set up Seider’s first goal of the season.

“I thought we had a great start to the second round,” Lalonde said. “Of course we got one in, had a few chances and then special teams took over.”
