46 all out: Records rewritten as India records lowest Test total at home

Statistical highlights from the first innings of the first Test between India and New Zealand in Bengaluru.

46 all out is India’s lowest total in an innings at home. Their previous low was 75 against the West Indies in Delhi 1987. It is also the lowest of any team in India, surpassing New Zealand’s 62 runs at Wankhede on their last tour of 2021.

Third lowest value Overall, their 46 all-outs in Indian Test history are behind only the 36 against Australia at Adelaide 2020 and 42 against England at Lord’s 1974. It is also their lowest against New Zealand, over 81 at Wellington 1976, and the lowest total by any team against New Zealand in Tests. The previous lowest score was Zimbabwe’s 51 in Napier in 2012.

Lowest In Asia, the 46 all-outs replace the West Indies’ previous record of 53 against Pakistan in Faisalabad in 1986 and Pakistan against Australia in Sharjah in 2002.

Second lowest total in the first inning by any team that chooses to bat in a home Test, with India’s 46 all-outs trailing only New Zealand’s 42 against Australia in Wellington (1946). It is also the fourth lowest first innings total of any team after electing to bat first in Test cricket.

For the third time India have lost more than three wickets for 10 runs or less at home since 1990 and, as it happens, all the instances have come against New Zealand. They were 7/3 in Mohali 1999 and 2/3 against New Zealand in Ahmedabad 2010.

34 is India’s sixth lowest total at the fall of the sixth wicket in Tests and their second lowest at home after 27 runs against New Zealand in Hyderabad in 1969.

Five Indian batsmen scored ducks, the second most for India in an innings. This is also the third time overall and the first time in a home Test that four of India’s top seven batsmen have been eliminated for ducks.

Second instance In one Test innings, five of the top eight batters were dismissed for ducks. The previous example was Australia versus England in Manchester in 1888.

10 wickets The innings saw the Pacers fall to the Pacers, only the second time since 2010 when the visiting Pacers achieved such a feat against India. The only other case in the above period also came from New Zealand, in the same location in 2012.

5/15 bowling figures for Matt Henry, his first five-wicket haul against India and the most economical five-wicket haul by a New Zealand bowler in Test cricket. It is the fourth best for a New Zealand pacer in India. Tim Southee’s 7/64 in Bengaluru 2012 remains the top scorer, followed by Doin Nash’s 6/27 in Mohali 1999 and Richard Hadlee’s 6/49 in Wankhede 1988.

100 Test wickets for Henry, who became New Zealand’s second fastest player after Sir Richard Hadlee to reach this milestone in terms of number of games played. Neil Wagner also played 26 matches for his 100 Test wickets.
