The warm weather will continue throughout the weekend

Green flags are still expected for the remainder of the Balloon Fiesta, with a box effect possible on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Our weather starts to cool down next week.

Record temperatures were broken again Friday afternoon in places like Santa Fe, Farmington, Gallup and Silver City. Today, well above average warmth and dry weather continued across the state. Winds remained light this afternoon and will remain light overnight.

Lighter winds are forecast for the final two mass ascensions at the Balloon Fiesta. Newer forecast models also bring the box effect back to Alquerque on both mornings. Winds on the ground push the balloons south, but higher up the wind changes direction and then pushes the balloons northeast. There will be a similar story on Sunday morning too. Temperatures will be in the mid to low 50s in Fiesta Park before warming to the high 80s in the afternoon. The rest of the state will also experience calm but warm weather this weekend, with more record heat possible on Saturday. On Sunday, high pressure will begin to dissipate, allowing temperatures to finally cool down.

A weak backdoor cold front will move through eastern New Mexico Sunday night into Monday. This will help cool temperatures by a few more degrees, particularly in the eastern half of the state, through Tuesday. By the end of next week, a trough (jet stream collapse) will also move westward toward New Mexico, producing breezy to breezy weather. This could also lead to rain again in parts of the state late next week. While temperatures will continue to be warmer than normal for most of next week, this low will send a Pacific cold front into the state, bringing much cooler air next weekend.
