Country superstar visits Ohio juvenile detention center before concert

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Country superstar Jelly Roll was in Columbus on Wednesday for a concert at Nationwide Arena, part of his “The Beautifully Broken” tour.

However, WCMH Channel 4 reports that the musician took some time before the show to visit the Franklin County Juvenile Intervention Center, where he met with the teens and even played cards with them.

Jelly Roll was one of the most successful country musicians of recent years. He had three No. 1 hits in 2023, won the Country Music Association’s Best New Artist award and is nominated for two Grammy Awards.

But the 39-year-old musician, whose real name is Jason DeFord, knows what it’s like to be incarcerated, CBS News reports. He has spent time in and out of prison since the age of 14 for various drug offenses, thefts and aggravated robberies.

WSYX Channel 6 reports he spoke to teens in Columbus about his own experiences.

“I know I sat in your seat, and when I did, I know no one ever came in and showered me with love,” he said. “I’ve won a lot of awards, I’ve made a lot of money, but most of all I try to give back.”

Jelly Roll recently released a new album, Beautifully Broken, its third in four years and tenth overall. Jelly Roll will also be part of this year’s Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony on October 19 at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse
