Sydney Sweeney says she was “immersed in training” for the new role like she has never been before

Sydney Sweeney steps into the ring as she prepares for a new film role that will stand out from her previous work.

The actress and producer shared an update on her Instagram page on Wednesday revealing how production is progressing on an as-yet-untitled biopic about famed boxer Christy Martin. In the post, Sweeney wrote that she was “immersed in training to bring the story of an incredible woman to life.”

She shared two photos of herself on set wearing a red muscle T-shirt that showed off the physical results of her workout, as well as a curly ’90s-style hairstyle.

In the caption, Sweeney described Martin – widely considered the most successful female boxer and a pioneer of inclusion of women in the sport – as a “true champion who fought battles both inside and outside the ring.”

“Her journey is a testament to resilience, strength and hope, and I am honored to follow in her footsteps and share her powerful story with all of you,” Sweeney wrote.

According to Deadline, the David Michôd-directed biopic will follow Martin’s rise to fame in the 1990s, which led to her becoming boxing’s best-known female competitor after becoming the first woman to sign with legendary promoter Don King.

After retiring from boxing in 2012, Martin founded an organization called Christy’s Champs, which supports victims of domestic violence.

Sweeney is best known for her role as Cassie on the HBO teen series Euphoria and the first season of The White Lotus. Since then, she has brought her talents to the big screen in the hit 2023 romantic comedy Anyone But You and the horror film Immaculate.

Portraying someone like Martin will add even more depth to Sweeney’s acting roster.

“Christy’s story highlights her incredible rise to the top while showing the behind-the-scenes struggles of fame,” Sweeney told Deadline in May about taking on the role. “I feel compelled to tell a story about a woman who faced so much adversity and didn’t let it defeat her. It’s powerful and emotional.”
