Early voting for the 2024 general election is set to begin in Florida in just a few weeks to elect and decide a new president in the race between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris, as well as members of Florida’s congressional delegation, including the U.S. Senator on two controversial amendments – one on legalizing recreational marijuana and the other on access to abortion.

The mandatory early voting period in Florida is Saturday, October 26th through Saturday, November 2nd. However, many counties are offering residents a longer period to vote. In Northeast Florida, Duval, St. Johns, Clay and Nassau counties each offer additional early voting options.

Here’s what you should know to vote early:

When does early voting begin in Duval County?

In Duval County, registered voters can vote early at select early voting locations starting Monday, October 21, and continuing through Sunday, November 3.

From Oct. 21 – Nov. 3, early voting locations in Duval County will be open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

What do I need to bring to the polling station to cast my vote?

Voters should bring at least a valid and current ID with photo and signature. Acceptable photo IDs include:

  • Florida driver’s license
  • Florida ID card (issued by DHSMV)
  • US passport
  • Debit or credit card
  • Military ID
  • Student ID card
  • ID of the retirement home
  • Neighborhood association ID
  • Social assistance card
  • Veteran Health ID (issued by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs)
  • Concealed Weapons License (issued in accordance with FS 790.06)
  • Employee identification card issued by a branch, department, agency, or corporation of the federal government, state, county, or municipality

When is election day?

While some voters will cast their vote for president via absentee ballot or early voting, others will go to the polls on Tuesday, November 5th.

Polls in Duval County and throughout Florida will be open on Election Day, Tuesday, November 5, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

How do I register to vote?

Not registered? You can download the voter registration application at the Florida Department of State website: https://registertovoteflorida.gov/home

  • Your most current and valid Florida driver’s license (Florida DL) or Florida identification card (Florida ID).
  • The last four digits of your social security number

If you don’t have the necessary information, you can still use the online system to pre-fill an online voter registration form that you can print out. Sign it and either mail it to your district returning officer’s office or drop it off there.

You can also register to vote in person at:

  • Any election office manager (by mail or in person)
  • Any office that issues Florida driver’s licenses or identification cards
  • Any voter registration office, such as a public assistance office
  • Any voter registration campaign by an organization that has met Florida’s updated standards
  • Any public library

Who can register to vote?

To register you must:

  • be a citizen of the United States of America;
  • Be a legal resident of Florida;
  • You must be a legal resident of the county in which you wish to be registered.
  • You must be at least 16 years old to pre-register or at least 18 years old to register and vote.
  • You must not be a person who has been declared mentally incapacitated in Florida or any other state without the right to vote restored. And,
  • Don’t get convicted of a felony without having your right to vote restored.

Under state law, providing false information is a third-degree felony. The maximum penalty is $5,000 and/or five years in prison.

When is the deadline to register to vote?

In Florida, the deadline to register to vote for an upcoming election is 29 days before that election. For the 2024 general election, the deadline was Monday, October 7th.
