Tell Me Lies Season 2 Finale: Stephen’s Revenge Revealed

(This story contains major spoilers from the Season 2 finale of Tell me lies“Don’t fight like that, or I’ll only love you more.”)

As viewers get caught up in the Season 2 finale Tell me lies – which featured one twist after another – stars Grace Van Patten and Jackson White share some of the shocking moments.

After an arguably more toxic season than the first, the second finale of the hit Hulu series offered tragic, surprising and breathtaking moments from start to finish, including the deaths of Wrigley’s (Spencer House) younger brother Drew (Benjamin Wadsworth), Oliver’s (Tom Ellis) revealed the open marriage, Diana’s (Alicia Crowder) orchestrated separation from Stephen and Stephen dropped a bombshell on Bree’s (Catherine Missal) and Evans’ (Branden Cook) wedding day in the 2015 timeline, among other things.

Van Patten tells The Hollywood Reporter that she “really couldn’t believe” what Stephen did in those final moments of the season. “I’m so excited to see what (showrunner) Meaghan (Oppenheimer) has in store for a third season and what the rest of this wedding would look like,” she adds.

Below is the main couple Tell me lies chat with THR about the shocking final episode, their characters’ toxic moments in the second season and what they would like for their characters in a possible third season. Let’s dive in.

With all the twists and surprises, what went through your mind when you both first read the script for the season two finale?

GRACE VAN PATTEN I couldn’t believe Stephen had recorded Evan saying that (he cheated on Bree with Lucy) and saved it for how many years? Eight years.

JACKSON WHITE I thought he had transferred it to another phone or another USB drive. He had to buy an old charger and have the phone reactivated.

VAN PATTEN The work this man had to do to keep a bomb for eight years… so much work. This just exceeded my expectations of how manipulative he actually was. I really couldn’t believe that. I was shocked too and am so curious to see what Meaghan would have in mind for a third season and what the rest of this wedding would be like.

It was a very thoughtful revenge from Stephen.

WHITE It’s psychotic.

I always hope to see some redeeming qualities in Stephen, but unfortunately there wasn’t much of that. Jackson, do you think Stephen really only cares about himself?

WHITE Oh, I don’t know, self-protection. Yes, he takes care of himself. But I also think he is very scared. He’s just so afraid of losing and not finishing at the top. And so he reacts accordingly and tries to manipulate everything in a targeted manner. He is a very goal-oriented person.

After Leo (Thomas Doherty) physically beats Stephen, a small smile crosses Stephen’s face as he realizes he’s just won Lucy back. I felt like that tiny moment really defined him as a character. Was that in the script or did you improvise it?

WHITE I know, I know, it really was! No, it was registered. It was a big part of that sequence that was written in there because like you said, it sums it all up pretty well and he got exactly what he wanted. I love the way it turned out. I thought it was kind of cool and it was really fun to shoot – so much blood, gooey blood.

Lucy really tried to work on herself this season, but kept finding herself in chaotic situations. Grace, do you think Lucy thinks she’s trying to be helpful, or is she being intentionally messy?

VAN PATTEN I think she’s trying really hard, but maybe doesn’t know how to do it properly. I think it gets complicated when she overcompensates for something she isn’t honest about. She doesn’t apologize, admits the things she did wrong, and then tries to regain trust. She just does it blindly and tries to make up for herself even though her friends don’t even really know what she’s trying to make up for. It gets twisted and that’s why it gets messy.

But I think it’s real. I think she’s really trying to be a good friend and make up for what she did last year and support both friends (Bree and Pippa, played by Sonia Mena) on their own journeys, and then she fails , but it creates tension within the group. Because Lucy almost becomes the grounded confidant of her two friends, which is crazy.

This season, Lucy and Jackson are not in a relationship, but they are just as toxic, if not more so, than they were in the first season. How did you both cope with this change in the second season? (Editor’s Note: Van Patten and White have an off-screen relationship.)

VAN PATTEN Every scene we got to do together, which was fewer than last season, was so extremely charged that it was just fun to play with that tension and the subtext of it and the whole story between these two people. It was just so much fun to play in.

WHITE The cool thing about rarer interactions with these two is that when they show up, like you said, it’s just overloaded.

If you get another season (fingers crossed), what do you hope to see for each of your characters?

VAN PATTEN What I hope for the character is alone time, but for the show and for drama purposes (laughs), I hope they continue. But for me, I wish human Lucy would just leave Stephen and figure herself out.

WHITE I wonder if it would be cool to see Stephen completely stuck with nowhere to run or go. I don’t even know what that means, that there’s no way to manipulate your way out of something. And then Meaghan also said that there was an idea for a threesome with Wrigley, and if that came up, I wouldn’t oppose it. But we’ll see, we’ll keep our fingers crossed.
