Former Grey’s Anatomy writer Elisabeth Finch apologizes ahead of new documentary

Former Grey’s Anatomy Writer Elisabeth Finch has apologized in response to tonight’s premiere of Anatomy of lifea Peacock documentary about her “rise and fall” on the ABC series.

The streamer said the series features some of Finch’s “closest contacts, many of whom are speaking for the first time.” It became a Vanity Fair Source material article chronicling Finch’s lies while writing for the Shonda Rhimes series.

In a lengthy Instagram post today, Finch wrote: “I lied so much; Things that have devastated so many people in real life. I’m sorry, it feels like the smallest words compared to what I did, but they are the truest. I fell into the trap of adding lies and betraying and traumatizing my closest family, friends and colleagues. I am making amends and expressing my sincere regret as best I can if people are willing.”

Finch, best known for writing “Silent All These Years,” a 2019 episode about a rape victim in which Finch also appeared in a non-speaking role as a nurse, left GrayIt’s 2022, after revelations about her behind-the-scenes behavior became public. The allegations included that she lied about her medical history, such as that she had been diagnosed with a rare form of bone cancer, that she lost a kidney and part of her leg but was then misdiagnosed, and that she was verbally abusive and endured sexual abuse from someone male director while writing for The Vampire Diaries.

In an interview in 2022, Finch admitted: “I know what I did is absolutely wrong. I lied and there is no excuse for it. But there is a context for it. The best way I can explain it is that many people use maladaptive coping mechanisms when experiencing trauma. Some people drink to hide or forget things. Drug addicts try to change their reality. Some people cut. I lied. That was my coping and my way of feeling safe and seen and heard.”
